ABOUT

Dora Barta,

Counsellor & Psychotherapist, founder of Coast Counselling

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and it can help to know a little about the person you may be working with.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology and an M.Sc. in Sociology and Cross-Cultural Communication, bringing together therapeutic training with a wider understanding of how relationships, culture, and life circumstances shape our emotional world. I am a professionally registered counsellor with the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC).

My approach is integrative and evidence-based. I draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Existential Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy, alongside training in Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. In my work with couples, I incorporate principles from the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). This allows me to shape the work around you rather than follow a one-size-fits-all approach.

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in healthcare and education in the UK and Singapore. As a mother of two who has lived in four countries, I also understand the complexity of family life, major transitions, and building a sense of belonging across cultures.

Individual therapy offers a private, supportive space to explore what you are going through and make sense of the patterns, emotions, and experiences affecting your life.

People come to counselling for many reasons, including anxiety, grief, relationship difficulties, self-esteem concerns, traumatic experiences, or life transitions such as relocation, career change, or becoming a parent. Sometimes there is a clear problem; other times, you may simply feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why things feel difficult.

In our work together, I will support you in feeling heard and understood, while gently helping you move towards insight and change both in person near City Hall MRT and online.

Couples therapy is not about deciding who is right or wrong, but about understanding the patterns that have developed between you.

When conversations keep turning into conflict, distance grows, trust feels fragile, or the same issues return again and again, it can become difficult to see each other clearly.

In this space, both partners have the opportunity to pause, reflect, and understand not only what is being said, but also what may be happening underneath: the hurt, fears, expectations, and unmet needs that often drive repeated cycles.

Drawing on principles of the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, we slow this process down and look at what is happening beneath the reactions, so both partners can feel heard, rebuild trust, understand each other more deeply, and begin relating in a different way.

Fountain Pen Writing
"Dora, from the very beginning, made me feel safe, truly safe, to talk about things I usually keep guarded. She never dismissed anything I said, but instead helped me see myself with more kindness and understanding. That alone was incredibly healing. She gave me tools I didn’t even know I needed, which helped me reconnect with parts of myself I had ignored or misunderstood. They also opened up space for reflection, clarity, and even a bit of hope. What I appreciated most was her presence - warm, steady, patient. Even on the days when I felt heavy or stuck, she managed to make me feel lighter when I left the session. I’m deeply thankful for the support Dora offered, and I would recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a counsellor who is not only skilled, but truly compassionate!"
