Couples counselling singapore

Understand each other, reconnect
and find a way forward

You may still care deeply about each other, yet find yourselves caught in the same arguments, misunderstandings or periods of distance. Perhaps trust has been damaged, affection has faded or the pressures of work, parenting, relocation or loss have changed the way you relate to one another.

Couples counselling offers a confidential, structured space where you can slow things down, understand what is happening between you and begin having conversations that may feel too difficult to manage alone. I provide couples therapy in person in Singapore for partners who want to communicate more effectively, rebuild trust and develop a stronger, more connected relationship.

How couples therapy can help

Relationships rarely become difficult because of one disagreement. More often, couples gradually become caught in patterns that repeat themselves. One partner may pursue a conversation while the other withdraws. Attempts to express hurt may come across as criticism, leading to defensiveness, frustration or silence. Over time, both people can begin to feel unheard and alone within the relationship.

Couples counselling creates space to identify these patterns and explore what lies beneath them. What appears on the surface as anger, blame or withdrawal may be connected to deeper feelings of hurt, fear, loneliness or the need to feel valued and secure.

Couples may seek counselling for:

  • Frequent arguments or communication difficulties

  • Emotional distance or loss of closeness

  • Trust concerns, secrecy or betrayal

  • Difficulties with physical or emotional intimacy

  • Parenting disagreements and family pressures

  • Work stress affecting the relationship

  • Differences in values, expectations or cultural backgrounds when preparing for marriage

  • Grief, trauma or loss affecting one or both partners

  • Major transitions such as marriage, parenthood or career changes

  • Recurring issues that never seem fully resolved

  • Uncertainty about whether to remain together

  • Support in separating with greater care and understanding

You do not need to wait until your relationship reaches a crisis. Couples counselling can also provide a space to strengthen an already meaningful relationship, prepare for a major life transition or address concerns before they become more difficult to resolve.

A neutral space for both of you

Couples counselling is not about deciding who is right or wrong. My primary focus is the relationship and the patterns that have developed between you.

Both partners are given space to speak and be heard. My role is not to take sides or determine who is to blame, but to help you understand how each person’s reactions affect the other and keep difficult cycles going.

We may slow down conversations that usually escalate quickly, explore the emotions and needs beneath your responses, and identify the moments when communication begins to break down. This can make it easier to listen without immediately defending yourself and to express difficult feelings without attacking or withdrawing.

Understanding the pattern does not mean avoiding responsibility. It allows each partner to recognise their part in the dynamic and begin responding differently.

My approach to couples counselling

My work with couples draws primarily on the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). These approaches help us look at both the patterns you can see - such as criticism, defensiveness, escalating arguments or withdrawal - and the more vulnerable emotions and attachment needs beneath them.

The Gottman Method provides practical, research-informed tools for improving communication, managing conflict, rebuilding trust and strengthening friendship and intimacy. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples understand the emotional cycle that keeps them disconnected and create a greater sense of safety, responsiveness and closeness.

Depending on what is happening in your relationship, our work may focus on:

  • Recognising and changing recurring cycles of conflict

  • Expressing needs without blame or criticism

  • Responding to each other with greater openness

  • Repairing conversations after disagreements

  • Rebuilding trust following hurt, secrecy or betrayal

  • Restoring emotional and physical intimacy

  • Navigating differences in values, culture or expectations

  • Strengthening friendship, affection and appreciation

  • Making important decisions about the future together

The goal is not to prevent every disagreement. Conflict is a natural part of close relationships. Instead, counselling can help you understand what happens between you during difficult moments and develop ways of responding that protect connection rather than deepen distance.

Support for different relationships and different stages

Couples come to counselling at many different stages of their relationship. You may be dating and considering a shared future, preparing for marriage, adjusting to living together or navigating the changes that come with parenthood. You may have been together for many years and feel that you have gradually grown apart, or you may be facing a particular rupture that has changed the relationship.

I work with married and unmarried partners, heterosexual and same-sex couples, and couples from different cultural backgrounds. Your relationship does not need to fit a particular model to be taken seriously. Counselling is shaped around the relationship you have, the commitments you have made and the future you are trying to understand.

You also do not need to be on the verge of separation to benefit from counselling. Some couples come because their relationship is in crisis; others want to address difficulties early, strengthen an existing bond or prepare for an important transition.

When you want different things from counselling

It is common for partners to arrive with different levels of hope, motivation or certainty. One person may be eager to repair the relationship while the other feels hesitant, exhausted or unsure whether staying together is still possible.

Couples counselling does not require you to begin with the same perspective or a shared decision about the future. Part of the work may be understanding why you have reached different positions and creating enough emotional safety for each of you to speak honestly.

My role is not to persuade you to stay together or encourage you to separate. It is to help you understand your relationship more clearly, explore whether repair is possible and make thoughtful decisions rather than remaining trapped in repeated conflict or uncertainty.

In-Person Couples Counselling in Singapore

Unlike individual therapy, which is available both online and in person, I currently offer couples counselling exclusively in person. Meeting together in the same room allows me to observe the interaction between you more closely and support difficult conversations as they unfold.

Sessions take place in a private and conveniently located therapy room at The Adelphi, near City Hall MRT in central Singapore. The setting provides a calm, neutral space where both partners can speak openly, feel heard and work on their relationship together.

What to expect from couples counselling

Couples counselling is more active and structured than two people simply taking turns to describe their concerns. I will pay attention to how you communicate in the room, where conversations become stuck and what each of you does when you feel hurt, criticised, dismissed or disconnected.

We will explore the history and strengths of your relationship alongside the difficulties that brought you to counselling. Both partners will have opportunities to describe their experience, but the focus will gradually move from the content of individual disagreements to the pattern underneath them.

As these patterns become clearer, we can practise different ways of expressing needs, responding to vulnerability and handling conflict. The aim is for what you learn in the counselling room to become useful in your everyday relationship - not only during sessions.
